๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง What to Expect at the London Marathon (2026 Edition)

Having run London before, I’ve gathered some key insights to help you navigate the course and the entire race weekend. Let’s dive in!

If youโ€™re lining up for the London Marathon on April 26, 2026โ€ฆ get ready!

This race? Itโ€™s magic.

Still my second favorite after NYC (you already know ๐Ÿ˜), but London has something different: the crowds donโ€™t just cheer youโ€ฆ they carry you. From start to finish, itโ€™s loud, emotional, and SO well organized.

Letโ€™s get you ready like a pro ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿš‰ GETTING TO THE START (READ THIS CAREFULLY)

This year is a little different, so donโ€™t rely on old info.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Itโ€™s no longer just Red / Blue / Green
๐Ÿ‘‰ You now have 5 Assembly Areas + 3 Start Lines

๐ŸŽจ Your bib = your destiny:

๐Ÿ”ต Blue

  • Assembly: Blue
  • Start Line: Blue
  • Station: Blackheath (~10 min walk)

๐ŸŸข Green

  • Assembly: Green
  • Start Line: Blue
  • Station: Blackheath (~10 min walk)

๐Ÿฉท Pink

  • Assembly: Pink
  • Start Line: Pink
  • Station: Maze Hill (~10 min walk)

๐Ÿ”ด Red (white bib)

  • Assembly: Red
  • Start Line: Red
  • Station: Greenwich (~20 min walk)

๐ŸŸก Yellow (red start)

  • Assembly: Yellow
  • Start Line: Red
  • Station: Blackheath (~10 min walk)

๐Ÿ‘‰ Yesโ€ฆ itโ€™s more detailed now. Donโ€™t wing it.

๐Ÿ“ฉ Your official email (3 weeks before race day) will tell you EXACTLY where to go. Treat it like your bible.

๐Ÿš‡ Pro tip (one of the best perks):

๐Ÿ‘‰ Free transport to the start
Just show your bib. DO NOT tap in/out

โฐ Timing matters:

  • Start waves: ~9:30 AM โ€“ 11:30 AM
  • All starts CLOSE at 11:30 AM (no exceptions ๐Ÿ˜ฌ)

๐Ÿ‘‰ You can start later than your wave, but NOT earlier.

๐Ÿ“ START AREA REALITY CHECK

  • Expect airport-level security
  • Arrive EARLY
  • Wear your bib for checks

๐Ÿšบ Ladies, good news:

๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œPEEQUALSโ€ (female urinals) are officially part of the setup now ๐Ÿ™Œ

Still chaoticโ€ฆ but better.

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ THE COURSE (FAST, FLAT & ICONIC)

Officially ๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œFast & flatโ€ with ~246 ft elevation

But letโ€™s break it down the real way ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ“‰ Miles 1โ€“3: CHAOS + DOWNHILL & CROWDED

  • Donโ€™t stress about pace. GPS will bounce a bit here anyway.
  • Just keep moving steadily and use this time to shake off the nerves.
  • Smile and enjoy the drumlines and cheers from local neighborhoods.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ Miles 4โ€“12: VIBES BUILDING โ†’ TOWER BRIDGE

Youโ€™ll weave through Woolwich, Deptford, and Bermondsey before the course delivers a goosebumps momentโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ’ฅ Mile ~12โ€“13: Tower Bridge

  • Tower Bridge. One of the most iconic sights in marathon running. The roar of the crowd, the view, the pride, itโ€™s unreal!
  • This is a great place to take it all in, but donโ€™t surge too early.

๐ŸŒ€ Miles 13โ€“21: CANARY WHARF MIND GAMES

  • This part is mentally tricky: fewer crowds, lots of turns, and you’re not quite at the finish stretch.
  • Focus on fueling. Hydration and carbs are key right here.

๐Ÿ“ Around Mile 18โ€“19: Canary Wharf

This is where your race actually begins.

  • Stay relaxed and keep your cadence steady.
  • You’ll pass Canary Wharf and hit mile 20 before heading back toward the city center.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Fuel here. Seriously.

  • Gels at ~Miles 13 & 19
  • Electrolytes at ~7, 15, 21, 23

๐Ÿ“ฃ Miles 21โ€“25: THE HOME STRETCH GETS REAL

Now you’re back along the Thames. The crowds are back too big time. Every step gets louder. People will shout your name if itโ€™s on your bib.

Youโ€™ll pass:

  • London Eye
  • Houses of Parliament

Energy might dip. This is where mental toughness carries you through.

๐Ÿ Mile 26: THE GRAND FINALE

The final stretch is breathtaking.

  • Buckingham Palace on your left
  • Turn onto The Mall

And boomโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง The most iconic finish stretch in the world.

The Union Jack-lined street is pure marathon magic. Smile. Cry. Soak it in.

๐ŸŽ‰ RACE WEEKEND (DONโ€™T MISS THIS)

๐Ÿ The Running Show (Expo)

๐Ÿ“ ExCeL London
๐Ÿ“… April 22โ€“25 (NEW confirmed dates)

โ›”๏ธ IMPORTANT:
๐Ÿ‘‰ NO race-day bib pickup โ€” zero exceptions

Bring:

  • QR code
  • Photo ID

๐Ÿ’ก Go Wed/Thu if you can. Saturday is madness

โšก NEW FOR 2026:

๐Ÿ‘‰ A Friday 5K kickoff event in Battersea Park

Perfect to:

  • Shake out the legs
  • Meet runners
  • Feel the vibe early

๐Ÿšฝ COURSE SUPPORT (SUPER WELL ORGANIZED)

  • Water: every 2โ€“3 miles
  • Toilets: basically every mile (yes, London wins here)
  • Refill stations if you carry a bottle

๐Ÿ‘‰ This race TAKES CARE OF YOU.

โš ๏ธ CUTOFFS (VERY IMPORTANT)

  • Official cutoff: 8 hours after last start
  • The Mall closes at 7:30 PM

๐Ÿ‘‰ After that:

  • Finish moves to St Jamesโ€™s Park
  • You may be asked to move to sidewalks

๐Ÿ‘‰ Still counts. Still a finish. Still proud.

๐Ÿ‘ SPECTATORS (TELL YOUR PEOPLE THIS)

London crowds are insaneโ€ฆ but:

โš ๏ธ Expect:

  • Packed viewing zones
  • Train delays
  • Up to 90 min wait times in peak areas

Best spots:

  • Cutty Sark (~Mile 6)
  • Tower Bridge (~Mile 12)
  • Embankment (~Mile 24+)

๐Ÿ‘‰ Tell them: Pick ONE or TWO spots max.

๐Ÿงพ FINISH LINE LOGISTICS

After you finish:

  • Medal ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ
  • Recovery bag
  • Long walk (~30 min)
  • A well-earned heat cape.

๐Ÿ“ Meet-up:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Letter zones near Whitehall / Horse Guards

โš ๏ธ Phone signal = terrible
๐Ÿ‘‰ Pick a letter BEFORE the race

๐Ÿง  FINAL THOUGHTS (REAL TALK)

London is not just a race. It’s a world-class experience thatโ€™ll leave you in awe. Whether you’re chasing a PR or soaking up every cheer, remember: You belong here, and appreciate the effort some runners put into their costumes, making the whole race a total spectacle. And one thing I always tell my runners:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Donโ€™t just run it. Experience it.

Look around.
High-five strangers.
Smile at the madness.

And when you cross that finish line on The Mall? Throw your arms up. You just conquered one of the greatest races on earth. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ’ช

Have a great race!
