Applying for World Marathon Majors: Step-by-Step Guide

If you're a passionate runner, tackling one of the World Marathon Majors (WMM) is likely on your bucket list. Completing all seven—Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York City, Tokyo, and Sydney (added in 2025!)—is the ultimate achievement. However, applying for these prestigious races can be daunting. Fear not! This guide will break down the process for each.

1. Tokyo Marathon

Date: First Sunday in March
Entry Options: Lottery, time qualification, or charity.
Application Process:

  • Lottery: Enter the lottery when it opens in mid-August. Visit the Tokyo Marathon website.
  • Fast Runners: Tokyo offers a “RUN as ONE” program for those with fast marathon or half-marathon times. the application period is typically from early to mid-August.
  • Charity: Like the other majors, there’s a charity option with fundraising commitments. The application period kicks off mid-July.

2. Boston Marathon

Date: Patriot's Day in April
Qualify: Tough time standards or charity spots.
Application Process:

  • Qualify by Time: Boston has strict qualifying times based on age and gender. These times are updated periodically, so check the official Boston Marathon site for details.
    • Once registration opens (usually September), submit proof of your qualifying time from an eligible marathon.
    • The fastest qualifiers are accepted first until the field is filled.
  • Charity Entry: If your time doesn’t cut it, consider running for a charity partner. Each charity has fundraising minimums, but this is a popular option.

3. London Marathon

Date: End of April
Entry Options: Ballot, charity, or time qualification.
Application Process:

  • Ballot: The free ballot is one of the world’s most famous (and toughest!) entry systems. Applications open shortly after the race in April and remain open for a week. Results are announced in October. Apply on the LondonMarathon site.
  • Good for Age: Fast runners can apply through this program, with set standards by age and gender.
  • Charity Entry: Many runners secure spots through fundraising for charity partners.

4. Sydney Marathon (NEW in 2025!)

Date: End of August
Entry Options: Open entry, charity, and tour operators.
Application Process:

  • General Registration: As of now, Sydney’s entry is straightforward. Simply register on their official website, and the participants are selected randomly. The application process opens in December.
  •  Charity and Tour Operators Entry: Like other majors, charity and tour partners provide an alternative route.

5. Berlin Marathon

Date: Third week of September
Entry Options: Lottery, time qualification, or charity.
Application Process:

  • Lottery: The main entry method is the lottery, which opens in November. Sign up on the Berlin Marathon website.
  • Fast Runners: If you’ve run a marathon under the qualifying times set by Berlin, you can apply directly for guaranteed entry.
  • Charity or Tour Packages: Charity spots are available, or you can book a package through an official tour operator.

6. Chicago Marathon

Date: Second Sunday in October
Entry Options: Lottery, time qualification, or charity.
Application Process:

  • Lottery: Registration opens in late October or early November. Enter the lottery on the Chicago Marathon website.
  • Guaranteed Entry: You qualify if you meet time standards, run for a charity, or participate through legacy or international tour programs.
  • Charity: Charity spots are abundant, making this an accessible option for many runners.

7. New York City Marathon

Date: First Sunday in November
Entry Options: Lottery, time qualification, or charity.
Application Process:

  • Lottery: Open for several weeks in February. Enter the drawing on the NYRR website.
  • Guaranteed Entry: Options include qualifying by time, running 9 NYRR races the previous year (the 9+1 Program), or running for a charity.
  • International Tour Programs and charity: Many countries have packages that include a race entry, making this a good option for international runners.
Tips for Maximizing Your Chances:
  • Plan Ahead: Mark the application dates for each race and prepare your documentation (e.g., proof of qualifying times).
  • Consider Charity: Many WMM races offer guaranteed entries for charity runners. Research organizations aligned with your values.
  • Look Into Tour Operators: These packages often include entry, accommodation, and logistics, making them a convenient choice, especially for international runners.
  • Be Patient: For high-demand races like London or Tokyo, entering multiple years in a row increases your odds.
Note: Application periods are subject to change. It's essential to check each marathon's official website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Participating in the World Marathon Majors requires timely applications and adherence to each race's specific entry procedures.

Good luck!
